National program to safeguard intangible cultural heritage approved

During its regular meeting on February 13, the Cabinet approved the ‘National Program on Protecting Intangible Cultural Heritage', which will be realized through 2019-2023.

 

The National program will contribute to support talented folks and all Mongolian ethnic groups, protect national cultural heritages, pass it on to the next generation as well as to ensure cultural immunity of Mongolia.

At present, 80 types of cultural heritages have been inscribed in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and 16 cultural heritages have been registered in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. Specifically, 60 percent of national intangible cultural heritages are folk arts, 23 percent are handcraft, and 11 percent relates to mother tongue and folk tales. Moreover, national holiday, rituals, nomadic lifestyles related to nature and season, traditional knowledge and ways of life make up the remaining four percent.

To be implemented between 2019 and 2024, the Cabinet approved ‘Stone-built Cultural Heritage' as well. The program has been formulated to protect stone-built cultural heritage under joint administration and organization with the purpose of keeping the value and significance of history, culture and science.
